Stumbled across a new Pinkwater book last night, "Searching for Bobowicz", a sequel to "The Hoboken Chicken Emergency". To my knowledge, this is the first time they've released a hardcover edition of one of his kids' books. $16 is a little steep for something aimed at the 8-12 yr-old set, but I bought it anyway. :-)

who are you kidding..... they KNOW who their market is, and we'd buy the damn thing no matter much it cost. heck, I'd buy it even if it was printed on paper made from snail-darters.... -

Fri, July 16, 2004 - 1:18 PMLots of his stuff is out in hardcover, unless I'm just thinking of the library editions (I work in libraries, so that's where I've seen most of his stuff).
Sounds good though (even just hearing the title). I didn't really like HobChickEmerg that much though. -

Fri, July 16, 2004 - 1:38 PMChicken Emergency isn't my fave, either. But I was sold when I cracked it open and the first thing I saw was the name Vic Trola.
(I also used to work in a library's childrens' dept. All the hardcover editions of his that I remember were library binding.) -

Sat, July 17, 2004 - 9:58 PMnot true! i had a hardcover edition of 5 novels that had a super awsome dust jacket, a cartoon drawing of him with space stuff in the background, and a poster inside! it was the coolest, i gave it someone who desperatly needed some pinkwater in their lives.
on the cost note, ive been working in bookstores for the last 6 years (though not working in one right now) and $14-18 is a normal price for a hardcover kids book. it would be more like $25-30 if it was an adult book. this is of course, why used bookstores rock. new books simply are very expensive.
HOWEVER! how cool is that! i just found out about that book too from one of the pinkwater websites! i cant wait to get back to the states and buy one!! *sigh* so much pinkwater, so little time.....

Re: Searching for Bobowicz
Thu, July 22, 2004 - 7:15 AMFor the record, "Looking for Bobowicz" is better than the original "Chicken Emergency". Pinkwater does a good job of backfilling the story, so you don't necessarily have to have read the first book. My only complaints are: it is too short; there were many missed opportunities to go more in-depth with the story. While the deus ex machina is somewhat of a staple in Pinkwater books, he uses it to excess here; people exist for no other reason than to appear at the right moment and give the kids just the piece of information they needed.
Overall, much better than "Chicken Emergency" but not as good as "Fat Men From Space" (to use an example written for the same age group).

Better than Bobowicz
Fri, December 17, 2004 - 12:28 PMActually, it's Looking for Bobowicz, and there is a sequel to be published early in 2005, The Artsy Smartsy Club. Said to be much better than Bobowicz. -

Mon, September 26, 2005 - 10:14 PMI got it IArtsy Smartsy) and read it and liked it.
I have found that if one moves fast enough one can get his books in hardcover as they are first released. If there is a reissue, it is too often paperback, unless Enough time has passed.
