for many years, my prized possession was a (co-owned) copy of Young Adult Novel which had the inside title page hand-colored by the author.

my friend and I had earned this mighty treasure by compiling a list of all his books to that date, under his various pseudonyms.

so happy I found this tribe, I need to go find a copy of 'Alan Mendelsohn, The Boy From Mars' now...

Young Adult Novel is the only one I haven't read. My library had it on the shelf for a nanosecond and I haven't seen it since. What's it about?

      oooooooh!

run right out and read it!

It's sort of an object lesson in Dada fiction, while exploring the paths of several high school boys who perform various 'art-crimes' or 'art-actions' which invariably get closer and closer to shaping their reality, for better or for worse...

it's the funniest precursor to the matrix, or homage to surrealism, I've ever run across....

Agree in the strongest possible terms -- read it now, now, now! And know that I'm sitting here stewing in envy, bemoaning the fact that I can never again read that book for the first time...

YAN corrupted me as far as art is concerned. So much packed into there.

although I had figured a lot of the DaDa stuff out over the years (I dunno, call me stupid, but there was no way I could connect the toilet prank to Marcel Duchamp [whom I >had< heard of] in high school).... but when I eventually found out that the "[Msr. X] n'existe pas" thing was actually done in Paris in the 50s (60s?) I was astounded.

Mr. Pinkwater, you are a fiend, sir! A devil, and a god--yea, verily.
